The Prime Minister of Thailand Vowed Hand-on Appoach
In Yet Another Visit to 3 Southern ProvincesDuring 6-7 October 2005 |
During 6-7 October 2005, Prime Minister of Thailand, Taksin shinawatra, once again made another visit to Yala,Pattani and Narathiwat The Prime Minister intended to enhance ties with the local communities and understand the current situation in the area. This visit was seen as part of the proactive move by the Thai government to resolve the unrest problems in the areas as well as to see with his own eyes what should be corrected to improve the situation
The Prime Minister made visits to the residences of Masae Useng, Romlee Uttrarasin and sapae-ing Basor, three prime suspected militants involved with the unrest in the deep south. He told their relatives to tell the three to turn themselves in and seek justice in court. The government would guarantee their safety and they would be treated with justice. The Prime Minister described the move as a reconciliation approach to restore peace in the south
The Prime Minister also visited a ranger patrol unit in Cho Al Rong district, Narathiwat, where five soldiers were killed on 5 October 2005 , giving encouragement and support to boost the moral among all officers. He also told a commander to improve the procedure of the patrolling and weapon inspection. Even though this might be regarded by some as inconvenient, the inspection is necessary for all parties to insure safety, thus harmony in the areas
The Prime minister instructed officials to, with care, handle and assess the situation quickly and accurately. He also stressed that the development work should be accelerated as a mainstream program to bring better living condition and social welfare to the local people. He also inspected “the smart card project,” which will be initially issued to people in the 3 southern provinces. When issued, the card will provide many social benefits such as health service on 30-bath scheme, social welfare and education funds. Moreover, the card could be used to identify nationality of local people. These attempts reflect the long standing policies of the Thai government to address the problems in the south of Thailand at their root causes, namely the improvement of economic and social conditions for the better livelihood of the local people
